You need to search for a tattoo design that has a strong meaning for you personally. Look for visual reference material that inspires you and images that you can relate to. Look in books and magazines. A good place is to go to the library and also look in old bookshops. Even start to create a sketchbook or scrapbook of ideas. Even if you cannot draw very well, you can get in the habit of cutting out inspirational imagery and sticking them in to your scrapbook and making some notes to accompany the pictures. This can be then took to your chosen tattoo artist; this will help you explain your tattoo ideas.

You can also get a lot of ideas about different tattoo designs from the Internet. However you will have to sort through a lot of low grade tattoo designs first to find the good ones. But the Internet is a good place to find images to put in your scrapbook to use as visual reference for your unique custom tattoo designs.

From this visual material the tattoo artist should be able to make you a custom design. Most tattoo artists will be good at drawing so will be able to interpret the ideas in to a unique tattoo design. This can be offered up to your skin or painted on to your skin and from this, you will be able to make a decision on size and the best area to tattoo etc.

It might be worth using henna to get a temporary version of the tattoo design. You won't be able to see different colors, or certain looks, but you will be able to judge the feeling of a tattoo.  Henna lasts a week to a month so this will see how the tattoo feels and you will be able to see reactions from other people to the tattoo.

If you approach getting the perfect tattoo in this way it should make the tattoo design process a lot easier.
